چکیده

We demonstrate one-dimensional (1D) focusing of a thermal helium atom beam by quantum reflection from a cylindrical concave quartz mirror at near-grazing incidence. The smallest width of the focus achieved is 1.8μm, essentially limited by spherical aberration. The various effects that contribute to the finite focal width have been investigated. We propose to apply near-grazing reflection from two concave elliptical mirrors in a Kirkpatrick–Baez arrangement for two-dimensional (2D) focusing of a helium atom beam, paving the way for a helium atom microprobe.

Quantum reflection from an atomic mirror

We calculate the reflection probability for ultracold atoms incident on an evanescent-wave atomic mirror, and analyze the optimum conditions to observe quantum reflection. We find that averaging over the Gaussian profile of the laser beam dramatically reduces the quantum signature, and consider the effects of an appropriate aperture that limits the variation of beam intensity. We show that quan...

A moving magnetic mirror to slow down a bunch of atoms

Ultracold and slow beams have a huge potential in metrology, matter wave interferometry and nanolithography [1]. The achievement of an ultracold beam of neutrons was made possible by specularly reflecting neutrons from a Ni-surface which moved along the beam direction [2]. This breakthrough was followed by many achievements, among which neutron optics experiments [3] and neutron interferometry ...

Quantum reflection of helium atom beams from a microstructured grating

We observe high-resolution diffraction patterns of a thermal-energy helium-atom beam reflected from a microstructured surface grating at grazing incidence. The grating consists of 10-μm-wide Cr strips patterned on a quartz substrate and has a periodicity of 20 μm. Fully-resolved diffraction peaks up to the 7 order are observed at grazing angles up to 20 mrad. With changes in de Broglie waveleng...

Coherent slowing of a supersonic beam with an atomic paddle.

We report the slowing of a supersonic beam by elastic reflection from a receding atomic mirror. We use a pulsed supersonic nozzle to generate a 511+/-9 m/s beam of helium that we slow by reflection from a Si(111)-H(1x1) crystal placed on the tip of a spinning rotor. We were able to reduce the velocity of helium by 246 m/s and show that the temperature of the slowed beam is lower than 250 mK in ...

Atom Optics with Giant Quantum Reflection From a Solid Surface

Quantum reflection of an atomic wave from a solid surface is caused by the attractive van der Waals force acting on the atom near the surface. The researchers had previously verified the quantum reflection of a cold neon atomic beam from a silicon surface. In this research they demonstrate the first known reflective atom-optical elements that use natural interaction of a solid surface, or attra...
